ANTACIDS

Antacids, like Tums®,

neutralize the acid in your stomach, but they don’t block production of acid before it starts, like Nexium® 24HR. Antacids work quickly, but effects last for only 1-3 hours after use.

Histamine blockers (H2s), like Zantac®, block one of the signals that tell your body to produce acid. They begin working within 30 minutes, for up to 12 hours. But unlike Nexium® 24HR, H2s can become less effective if used more than a few days in a row for heartburn.
